hanging the show...

spent three fun hours today hanging the show - the grey wall will have the wallhanging hung without those white pieces and the title of the show (in pale grey vinyl) will be applied above the multiple shelves. i took these shots before ben had moved all the pedestals where he wanted them and placed his work, but it gives a good idea of what the final result will be. both ben and i are really pleased with how well our work "plays" together.

i'm really happy with how the wallhanging looks - the grey wall really makes the blues vibrant!

final tweaking...

So, after a bit of tweaking,  this is the version I will submit:

She had remembered. She had returned.

Did Anna grow crimson geraniums on her windowsills in winter?
Did Karen brighten the long days of darkness with colorful embroidery and careful drawnwork?
Did Dortea ever long to fly solo and return to the land of her birth to live a quiet life
Far from the tug of her husband and nine children?
And when they were young girls in Norway as I once was,
Did they play in the woods and make crowns of wildflowers?
Did they draw maps of magical lands on the tissue-thin bark of birch trees?
Did they dream of lavender moons or of windows that gave glimpses into the distant past?
Did they wish upon falling stars reflected in the still waters of fjords or bathe by the light of the midnight sun?
I feel them around me, my great-grandmothers and my grandmother
Who never held me in life but hold me now,
Answering my questions without words.
I like to think that their memories mingle with mine and live through me
That our common blood allows a transference of thought and experience across the vastness of time and space.
They help me remember.
They help me return.
They inspire me to continue to make memories
Knowing that these are the poems of our souls
That allow each day to linger
In the twilight of our lives.

The work in this exhibition had its genesis in the three years I lived in Norway as a child, and in my recent return after a 53 year absence. Visiting as an adult prompted questions about the women on my father’s side of the family who had emigrated to the United States in the mid-to-late 1800s, questions which I reflected on while creating this work. I owe much to their legacy and dedicate this work to their memory, and memories, with gratitude and love.

and for the program...

This is what I've written to be included in the program for the show (that will also list titles and prices):

She Had Remembered. She Had Returned

Did Anna grow crimson geraniums on her windowsills in winter?
Did Karen brighten the long days of darkness with colorful embroidery and careful drawnwork?
Did Dortea ever long to spread her wings and return to the land of her birth to live a quiet life?
And when they were children in Norway as I once was,
Did they play in the woods and make crowns of wildflowers?
Did they draw maps of magical lands on the tissue-thin bark of birch trees?
Did they dream of lavender moons or of windows that gave glimpses into the distant past?
Did they wish upon falling stars reflected in the fjords or bathe by the light of the midnight sun?
I feel them around me, my great-grandmothers and my grandmother

Who never held me in life but who hold me now.
They answer my questions without words.
They help me remember.
They help me return.
They inspire me to continue to make memories
Knowing that these are the poems of our souls
That allow each day to linger
In the twilight of our lives.

dream house...

i just had to get this one out of my system so i could get some other things done today:

dream house. digital drawing with embossing and pin holes.12" x 16". 2012

wouldn't it be lovely to have a house on a fjord with the midnight sun shining down? i think so, too!

women's work...

of late i have been thinking about the rich embroidery and lace-making traditions in norway and this piece came about as a result. i like the combination of the playful, childlike drawing and bright colors with the more sophisticated embossed white work:

women's work. digital drawing, embossing. 16" x 12". 2012

i've also been working on another drawing, but don't have the final version yet - just needs a few tweaks. it will be close to this, though - just some lines i want to fix in the upper left...

nordic chill. digital drawing. 12" x 16". 2012

i've been trying everything matted and framed and had hoped to finish last week, but some of the mats didn't come out right, so we had to order more. the good thing about that is that i've had a bit more time to be absolutely sure of the pieces i want to put in the show. the bad thing is... i've had a been more time and am driving myself nuts because i keep doing new work!

cheers,
karen anne

Sognefjord...

it has been on my mind and i wasn't completely happy with one of the pieces i had for the show, so i did this today and am really happy with it! it will be used on the postcard with one of the other artist's images:

sognefjord. digital drawing. 12" x 16". 2012

i'd share the story of my day doing matting and framing, but i'm too pooped! another time... i have to go back tomorrow and assemble the frames and cut some glass. a little freaked that it will be friday the 13th, but ...

A happy discovery...

A lovely woman named Katherine "liked" one of my quilts on Etsy - this one:

3.27.2012

In her profile, she mentioned she wrote a blog, Mulberry Shoots, a really lovely collection of her thoughts and musings. I particularly liked what she had written at the end of her "About" page":

I believe that we humans make life much more complicated than the Cosmos ever intended. And that if we remember to ask for help, give thanks when it arrives and believe that help is available, our lives are much lighter and more joyful. This ‘unseen hand’ has woven threads of gold into the fabric of my life. Without it, I would not be where I am now. Life is long and dreams do come true. Even when you might not know what they were at the time. I give thanks.

Spot on, yes?

Cheers,
Karen Anne

waterfall

i loved seeing all the waterfalls in norway, and some of the wildflowers were a wonderfully intense blue...

hot weather...

it's sooo hot today. don't think i'll get a quilt made since the studio is getting too warm.

decided to do a drawing instead - and just let my imagination wander. i really love drawing; something about a big piece of paper and a pencil or pen.

going home. pen and colored pencil. 16" x 12". 2012

all the lines are black ins spite of how the photo makes the outer ones appear blue. i was struggling to get a good image...need a bigger light box!

a solution

i've been planning what work will go in the show i'm having with another artist at a local art venue in august, and i had been thinking that i would mat and frame 3 of my daily quilts. i was concerned, however, that once i added the gallery commission, the cost of matting and framing, etc., the quilts would be priced considerably higher than if they were purchased in my etsy shop. it didn't feel right.

i'm pleased to report that i came up with a solution in the wee hours of the morning; make other quilts that are a different size and put those in the show!

here's the first one:

it's only 4.5 inches square, but i will mat it to fit a 16x20 inch frame - i happen to looooove large mats on small works. all the other pieces in the show will be either 16x20, too, or 18x24.

i've pretty much decided on the work - 14 pieces and a large textile hanging. a few are complete, but the others need to be tweaked or started. i had a bit of an anxiety  attack last night when i realized it's july and i need to complete everything and do all the matting and framing myself - all in time to hang the show 3 august. yikes.

i'm really pleased with what i have so far - they all go together well in theme, coloring, medium. i've seen a bit of the other artist's ceramic pieces and they are quite interesting - and i think it will be a pretty cohesive show. hope so!

cheers,
karen anne
