a new series...

i've been thinking a lot about communication; about how important it is, and how we sometimes stumble, grumble, and mumble trying to make ourselves understood. so often it's best to just stay with the basics and be as simple and clear as possible. easier said than done, though, isn't it?

anyway, all this thinking included thoughts about the visuals we use to communicate, and it all led to a new series of quilts: the alphabet series.

the alphabet series: a

i've challenged myself to do a series of 26 quilts - using one letter each day from the roman alphabet. i'm curious how the letters will reveal themselves. i'm hoping that they will be equally abstract and apparent - but you never know with my quilts...they are always a surprise!

i've loved alphabet books my whole life and have a number on my bookshelves that i've collected over time. perhaps these will make an interesting book. what do you think?

this new series excites me and i look forward to seeing where it leads. i hope you're intrigued, too!

    1. Shena, if there's one thing I've learned after making 214 little quilts, each one surprises me - always! I'm glad you'll be checking in to be surprised, too!

  2. This is my 3rd visit to A. It's mesmerizing and I can't wait to see how you address the rest of the alphabet.

Actually, are you familiar with the A Letter A Week blog? The 2013 version is just starting.

    1. Thanks you, Jennifer, for visiting and re-visiting "A"! I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the alphabet gets resolved, too, and know that it will all work out if I just listen and take one day (and letter!) at a time.

Thanks for sharing the link, too! I wasn't familiar with that blog so it will be fun to follow and see what happens there.

  3. Love this protective "A". I can feel the warmth as little "a" snuggles close and looks up knowing that big "A" is there. Can't wait to see what you do.--Julie

  4. Very cool, Karen! I don't know if you saw the alphabet that I've been working on TAFA, but I started backwards and got stuck on H is for Hats. I'll pick it up again when things calm down after the New Year and maybe by then, you'll catch up to me and I can feature your letters, too!

If you haven't seen them, they are here: http://www.tafalist.com/featured-products

  5. Rachel - I think you'll be doing the alphabet without mine! While the first one was okay, you can see that I was getting tense in the second, and all hell broke loose by "c"! Just shows what happens when I stop listening and thinking I know best. YUCK!

Anyway...perhaps the alphabet will bubble in my head for a while and someday make an appearance again...but I think it would only work if it is done outside of the daily quilts and becomes part of my other work. The daily practice wants and needs to be all about intuition, the moment, and my soul...

Hope your New Year is filled with wondrous good things! I've so enjoyed getting to know you a bit through TAFA and I'm grateful for all the work you do on our behalf!
